Fried Bananas

"Fried Bananas???" you ask.  Yup, fried bananas.  Carlos showed me how to make these many years ago.  We don't eat them too often because they are fried.  I think the last time we had them was about 2 years ago.

Carlos grew up in Livingston, which is on the coast of Guatemala - near Belize.  Bananas, coconuts, pineapples and mangos grow all over the place in Livingston.  Needless to say, there are a lot of creative dishes that include the indigenous fruit.

I bought the green bananas at Shoprite.  They are located with the funky root vegetables - yucca, jicama, etc - and with coconut.  The bananas are in a bag that says "Green Bananas".

The bananas are super hard.  I have to
use a knife and a potato peeler to take off the skin.

Back in the day (before I had a food processor), I would grate these by hand. It would take me about 1/2 hr to grate the bananas (and my knuckles) :p

A food processor is a beautiful thing!!!!

Add flour (or any gluten-free flour) to the grated bananas.  Add enough so the bananas aren't too sticky to the touch.

You want to be able to make mini "pancakes" with them.

Make sure the oil (I use canola) is hot enough.  There is nothing grosser than your food just sitting in cold oil.

Wait until the edges turn a golden brown.

 Look, I made a heart!!! =O)

Voila - they're done!!!

We normally eat these with black beans.  Carlos likes to add fried chicken with his meal.

What do they taste like??  Ummm,  they're not sweet.  It takes like a something fried that has a hint of banana.  You can put hot sauce or salt on them.  Oh, don't forget to put them on a paper towel so some of the oil will be absorbed.  I didn't put up a picture of our paper towel - it's a little gross :p  Still...fried bananas are good!

Drop me a line if you ever try these :)
